Job Overview

Rachel’s Network is a community of women at the intersection of environmental advocacy, philanthropy, and leadership. Our mission is to promote women as impassioned leaders and agents of change dedicated to the stewardship of the earth. We are a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.

The Membership & Development Director will build our network through developing and deepening relationships with current and potential Rachel’s Network members and fundraising for the organization and its programs. This position reports to the President and is based in Washington, DC.


Member Recruitment

  • Develop and lead membership recruitment plans with the Board and President to grow network. Develop a budget and establish benchmarks for progress.
  • Research, identify, and develop individualized plans for prospective member cultivation.
  • Track and maintain member and prospect information in NeonCRM and DonorSearch.
  • Engage with partner organizations in the funder network community.
  • Measure and report on membership goals throughout the year.

Member Engagement

  • Meet regularly with current and prospective members in person and online, individually and at group events.
  • Identify opportunities for current and prospective members to engage with the network, and follow up on member referrals and requests.
  • Work with the Program Director to host receptions, speaking events, and other functions.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for member recognition, engagement, and appreciation.
  • Lead staff discussions and strategy on member engagement plans and progress.

Fundraising & Development

  • Develop and lead fundraising around milestone events such as organization anniversaries. Establish fundraising goals and budget.
  • Create campaign materials with the Communications and Advocacy Director.
  • Report on campaign progress to the board and President.
  • Support the Catalyst Award Director in developing and implementing fundraising plans for the Catalyst Award.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum of six years of relevant experience in membership recruitment, development, or major gifts fundraising, ideally with a conservation/environmental or women’s organization.
  • Proven ability to recruit members and/or secure gifts from individuals of $10,000 or more and familiarity with best practices in development, recruitment, and cultivation.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member in a small, but busy office atmosphere with initiative, self-motivation, and flexibility.
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 2-3 times a year.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, problem-solving, writing and analytical skills with outstanding attention to detail and follow through.

  • Experience with database software such as Neon and DonorSearch.

Full-time employees also receive 15 days of annual leave, 10 days of sick leave, and 4 days of personal leave. Full-time employees are eligible for family leave after one year of employment and 20 days of annual leave after three years of employment.

Rachel’s Network provides paid health, prescription, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage, as well as a 401k employer match up to 4% after one year of employment. We also provide an annual wellness stipend of $1,000 and weekly half-day Fridays, to support the well-being of staff.

Our office is located in a LEED Platinum-certified building with high indoor air quality and energy efficiency, secure bike parking and EV charging stations, green cleaning products, and easy access to transit.

Employees living within a reasonable commuting distance from downtown Washington, DC are expected to work in the office at least two days a week.
